So, it’s almost December what should be a great month as always. I’m not really a big fan of Christmas besides the eating part but I am already looking forward to New Years Eve! I’ve been to parties at NYE but generally don’t like those as I rather spent my NYE with as many friends as possible. I haven’t made any real plans yet but I’ll probably go to a party nearby so I can drink as much as I like and crawl home!

December for me will also be a month to wrap up my SNE chase and that is of course a special moment as well 🙂 I’m planning to give a small SNE party when I make it which will be nothing else then having a drink with as much friends that would like to come over. Because of the “bad” planning of Christmas and NYE (both in the weekend) it will probably be during the week, so we have to limit ourselves to our hangover treshold!

Unlike November in which I worked every day in the weekend except yesterday, I have no weekend play planned in December. I’ll probably play some since I don’t want to risk having to put in to much play during the last week but at least I can do some nice stuff during the weekend again. The fun starts on Tuesday when I’m going out for diner to a real nice restaurant with my girlfriend and family since her little sister will go to Sri Lanka for a couple of months. On Friday I’ll have a combined birthday party which promises nothing else then alcohol and fun.

The week after I’m going to the casino with my nephew. I hardly visit the casino and usually we are not there to poker but to do a little blackjack and a drink. I don’t really like the Dutch casino’s (since Vegas) but a evening out with my nephew is always fun. In Vegas I’m okay to gamble it up but normally with my nephew (who is 19) I try to give the good example so I’ll probably not go broke on this one. The 17th of December is a night I’m really looking forward to! We’ve planned a night out with the Las Vegas crew, which is actually the first time I see Mick again and I didn’t go out with Bob as well since Las Vegas. We had a blast in LV but since we’ve all been busy with various stuff since then, this will probably a night where we tell our memories of those 8 days over and over again. Trust me, we have plenty of memories to keep going all night long and it will be fun to do some bar hopping in Amsterdam as well, which have been a while.

On the 23rd of December I have a concert of Caro Emerald which CD I’ve played over and over when it first came out. I really like the vibe of her music and if you haven’t heard of her yet you should check it out. She’s Dutch but doing very well in Europe lately and you might know her from a Bacardi commercial song.

I’ll have to continue playing some poker as well and I’ll probably have a little less then 100k VPPs left to play in December. I doubt that will be a problem but hopefully I’m going to play better or just run like god, since November was a real pain. I even lost money after rakeback which is really crazy but I don’t really want to talk to much poker. Just for the record, I lost $14.000+. I just don’t want to pay to much attention to that fact at this moment 🙂 Only thing left to say about it is that I really need to change my flop play (or post-flop play in general) but I just can’t seem to adept and seem to have completely lost my connection with playing a winning style of poker. When reviewing my hands I just don’t see it, which is a lot worse then playing bad because you are not focused or made some errors.

Yesterday I’ve been to Awakenings at the Westergas in Amsterdam which for me is really the best party out there. I just love techno and I’ve been dancing from 01:00 till 07:15 without drugs or alcohol. The last 3 hours was completely what I hoped for in which Ben Sims, Paul Mac & Surgeon blew the roof of the Westergas. I had a good night (day?) sleep and I’m ready for another session tonight. I have to work on Tuesday so I only have 1 “night” to play this week and I’m ready to wrap up this chase!

To give you an idea of what Awakenings is:

Not my year…

Poker  Comments Off on Not my year…

On Thursday I spotted the big difference between my style the end of October (when things were going great) and November. I plugged that leak and had a small win on Friday. I wrote on the Pokernews forum that I plugged my big leak but I guess I was wrong. Saturday/Sunday were the 2 worst days of this month. Did I fix something to make it even worse? I have no idea, but November is killing me.

I’ve played 182k hands in 129 hours, earned 107,5k VPPs and lost $10.911,50.

I paid $12.592,50 in rake what means that I still slightly beat the game without rake. Last year Oct – Dec were my best months of the year but not this year. I always like the end of the year (3 years in a row) because a lot of players needed to earn that extra bit of VPPs to get SNE or a huge milestone. They played more tables then they were used to, or played above their normal stakes. I kept doing what I was always doing, so could profit from those players.

This year most regs are probably just better then I am. When 6 regs are sitting on each table and I still beat the fish then it’s probably about right I’m barely beating the rake. I’m in a way happy I’m still beating the game but it’s the bare minimum. The last two days hit me hard since I was doing fine till about 00:00, both days I was up about $500. Probably most regs who beat my ass come online around that time, since both days I lost about $2k from that moment on. I can’t play during the day since there are not enough tables and I can’t move down because then I won’t reach SNE. That’s what I always did and I was never to stubborn to move down and always find my way up, this has to wait till next year I guess.

Quitting is no option, that would only cost more money. Unfortunately I can already conclude that this year sucks despite the fact I’m going to reach SNE. I could blame myself that I didn’t play more when things were still going good, but the whole plan was to play more during the period I normally earned the most. Some people might think that going for SNE might be the reason why things are going so bad but I really believe that things wouldn’t have gone a different way. Sure I could have moved down and won money. But the total sum would have probably been lower in the end, knowing the value of SNE.

My dad used to say: “Working hard won’t kill you”. And that’s exactly how I see it. At the end of this year I’ve worked 50+ hours for 45 weeks but I’m still smiling. At least I can say I did earn money, I know there are plenty of pokerplayers who go broke every year and I’m for sure not one of them. The coming 5,5 weeks I’m going to crunch out those last VPPs. I’m surprised how fit I am every day when playing, the fact that I don’t drink any alcohol probably has a lot to do with that. I’m still ready to play poker every day, I don’t think my mental state could be any better. In December I will allow myself some fun again and starting January it will all be about fun. What I’m going to do next year I still don’t know but I doubt I’ll quit poker this easy 🙂

Edit: For some who might wonder:I haven’t been contacted to become a Team Online Pro, all finalist should have been contacted before the 20th. Why did I pick up blogging just now again? More bad beats 🙂

November! The great month. As I wrote in my last blog, all I do this month is play poker! I had no issues at all with the fact I had to play a lot, I do however have issues with the fact that I cry myself to sleep almost every day!

The last 3 weeks of October were great and I saw no reason why this wouldn’t continue. Play a lot, make some money, that was the idea. I probably play bad but today was a perfect example of the daily pain I’ve been feeling this month.

The day started okay but soon it went downhill. I struggled all night long with ups and downs and when it was almost time to quit at 06:30 I’m finally in the green again. As I’ve been losing almost every day this month, I was extremely happy with the fact I grinded my way up again. Still fit, I motivated myself to do the last 1.000 VPPs of the day. At first I win some more and then the shit hits the fan! I manage to lose almost $700 in just 30 minutes and all hands were 100% coolers. There is just one small pot which I could have played different, all the others are just bad luck.

I didn’t come to tell you about my bad beats but this is part of my SNE chase and it doesn’t make things easier. I’m still really motivated to play cause I just want to get SNE this year but without that, I would have stopped playing a week ago. I’m nowadays happy with losing sessions of less then 4 digits and that’s not the way I want to play poker.

When I was still slightly up today I was thinking about giving a small November update. Not knowing I would be frustrated so sorry for the bitching. I want to stay positive and the only reason how I can still be positive is with the volume I’ve put in this month. From all the days I planned to play poker I skipped one but that was 100% a smart decision as I was really tired after playing a lot of poker but also working hard. The statistics so far this month:

Hands Played: 133.074
Hours Played: 98.42
Hands/Hour: 1352.15
VPPs: 79.128

Total VPPs:  837.015
Behind Pace: 36.958

I was aiming for 150K VPPs this month and I’m on pace to get 145K. That would leave me at 905K VPPs on the 1st of December and then it’s really just the last bits of the year. I lost about $6.500 so far this month and I wasn’t planning to lose another 🙁 I’m happy with anything better then the last two weeks and it’s now really time to sleep!

No long stories this time, but just a short update. At this moment I’m at 737.000 VPPs which is almost 80.000 behind pace. That’s more then I calculated but as stated before: “Not getting SNE is no option”.

For this week I have another 13K VPPs planned. On Saturday I will have a big Halloween party to let myself out of the house after day in day out grinding (I still work part-time as well). November will be a sick month, I need 150k VPPs which is only possible if I grind 6 days a week(way more then 40 hours). I will grind all the weekends except the last one, since on that Saturday I will go to Awakenings, for me the best (techno) party in the Netherlands and I’m already looking forward to that!

December will be another 100k, since I only had more then 100k VPPs in January (when I still played $15/$30) and hopefully November, this will not be that easy. I do however expect I can pretty much laugh at these last 100k, wow what a year! I’m still planning not to play any higher then $5/$10, but if needed I can move up and get VPPs faster. Currently the speed update (they reduced the time before the next hand is dealt) of the normal tables have helped me a lot. I now play 1400+ hands/hr which was roughly 1250 before.

I got a complete schedule for the rest of the year which tells me every day how many VPPs I need to get. This maybe sounds like I’m way over my head, but this is actually kind of what I had in mind. I rather prefer taking some time of during the summer and work hard at the end of the year then vice verse.

My girlfriend isn’t really happy with it all, so that’s why I already booked a trip to Florida/Bahamas starting the 2nd of January. I will first visit Orlando, drive to Miami and then fly to the PCA to play the $10.000 event. This also helps the chase as I can’t wait to finish it all to go on my first holiday with my girlfriend!

I have loads of stories from my Las Vegas trip, I have lots of stuff to write about my SNE chase in general but I really don’t feel like making a long blogpost (I also have to eat now and play poker right after). I will be happy to continue with a “good” blog from the 1st of January, but at this time I’m either playing or need my time to relax. Hopefully I can do another short blog somewhere in November. If you really interested I suggest to add me on Twitter, since I do give daily updates over there.

If anyone is still checking this blog, you know it’s a very long time ago I’ve updated it. The last time was actually the 1st of June which was a couple of days before my trip to France & Italy. Since then I’ve been more then busy and as blogging isn’t the most important thing on my to-do list I just didn’t create the time to start typing. Sure I haven’t been doing stuff non-stop during the last 2,5 months, but I need some time to relax as well. Not sure if I’m going to blog more often from now on, but at least an update for now which will cover the last 2,5 months.

Early June I left for holiday with one of my best mates. The idea was too cycle up Alpe D’Huez first and then relax in San Remo (Italy), Monaco, Nice, Juan-les-Pins, Cannes & st Tropez. Driving thru France was fun and we enjoyed a stop at Nancy before leaving on Saturday to Alpe D’Huez. I had never been to the alp’s before and only knew them from TV. Seeing how high these mountains really were was impressive but even more so, seeing the first bit of the climb off Alpe D’Huez really shocked me! The first 1,5km (1mile) is more then 10% and that’s steep! Luckily we were still in the car that day so I could get a little bit of rest before the big day on Sunday. We had a very nice hotel half-way up the climb with beautiful view.

I woke up early on Sunday and was ready to go around 09:00 in the morning. I was feeling fit but was anxious to see if I would make it. My goal was going up without stepping down a single time and I didn’t really care about the time it would take me. My mate would go ahead by car and would stop at every hairpin to make photo’s and do some filming. Maybe you don’t care about all the cycling, but I’ll add some pictures as this was probably the coolest thing I’ve ever done!

The climb is 13,8km(8.5miles) long with an average gradient of 7,9%, consists of 21 hairpins finishing at a height of 1.860 meters (6.100ft). The first 5 hairpins (about 2,5km) are incredible hard. It’s over 10% and although I was still fresh since I just started, it hurts! There is a constant pressure on your legs and back and my only thought was reaching the next hairpin. In each hairpin you could stretch your back a bit, slow down the pace without falling of your bike and get ready for the next part. Every hairpin I needed those 10 seconds of rest and my buddy was asking how I was doing since I looked like cracking already. After passing the 5th hairpin things got a little less steep and I could handle the gradient very well. Besides a part about 2/3 of the climb I really had a nice rhythm going but I didn’t want to push myself to hard as I was afraid I might have to pay the price later on. 1 hour and 49 minutes later I reached the finish and I didn’t step down a single time. It was a very long ride and I couldn’t have handled more then 10%. This climb was probably perfect for me and my training paid off! I will definitely do it again, although possibly another climb. I’m already thinking about what I would like to plan for next year, an experience to never forget!

After that I enjoyed a relaxed vacation, we had good weather, enjoyed the sight seeing, enjoyed the beach and didn’t party much at all. I wouldn’t bore you with all the details, let’s get to some more poker related topics!

May wasn’t really a good month as you could read in my previous blog and I was planning to play some poker next to watching as many worldcup matches in June. On the first day of my return, The Netherlands played against Denmark. We won, we had a lot of fun and I was planning to start playing the weekend after. I played a bit on Friday, The Netherlands played another match on Saturday and on Sunday I went to the beach as the weather was perfect. I started playing on Sunday evening again which is my real poker night and after 3 PokerStars freezes and a PokerTracker that was lagging I quit. I re-installed PokerTracker, couldn’t play on Monday because of that and on Tuesday I did another small session. The Netherlands reached the next round and the weather was still beautiful giving me enough excuses to hardly play any poker at all. June was the saddest month in 1,5 year of poker, playing only a total of 10.718 hands (I have days where I play 16K hands normally), losing a total of $23 bucks and some VPPs/FPPs.

Sure I enjoyed myself, but I started a SNE chase at the beginning of the year and I this wasn’t really according to plan. It was July and The Netherlands were still in the worldcup. I didn’t only watch the matches of our national team, I didn’t miss a single match! Therefor July started slow and I lost about $2.000 the first week. That week The Netherlands beat Brazil in the Quarter finals and we were up against Uruguay in the semi’s! I watched every match in a old restaurant which is owned by some friends, watching the worldcup with the same group of 40/50 people was the most fun I ever had during a worldcup. After beating Uruguay we were up against Spain in the finals, which unfortunately we lost 🙁 It would have been so cool if we would have won the worldcup, Spain did deserve the victory however and I had a blast for about a month long, which is something I’ll never forget!

The worldcup ended at the 11th of July and it was time for some serious grinding. Now the Tour de France (Cycling) also already started and I really love to watch the mountain stages. I had a brilliant idea to combine the Tour the France and a big grind by taking a week off from work and grind every single evening/night and during the day watch the Tour the France. This wasn’t all relaxing and watching sport but it was the best combo ever! Putting in hours was easy as I knew I could enjoy watching the Tour the France the next day and I had a record day at the 19th of July playing 16.879 hands in just 11,5 hours. Only a week later I broke that record again by playing 16.944 hands in 12 hours. I played a total of 152.476 hands in a little over 110,17 hours with an average of 1.384 hands/hour. Unfortunately there were not much $5/$10 tables (which is normal for June/July) and I only gathered 83.344VPPs. After the bad start I did won some money back finishing at -$654 but including FPPs/Milestone Bonus ($7.867) the overall score was +$7.213. Not that bad, but with 538K VPPs in total I was behind pace!

So August started and I was ready for another good month of grinding. During the full week of grinding I really enjoyed playing, won money and had a nice confident boost. August however had other plans for me…
The first day I lost $1.415 in 15K hands, the next 3 days another $1k and on the 8th I lost $1.764,50 and the following day another $1.121. In total I was down about $6.000 in only 10 days and 62K hands. There were a lot more $5/$10 tables and besides the fact that these tables are a lot tougher and I’m probably not a winner at these stakes anyway (not anymore that is), I was really running afwul. If I didn’t think this was true I could better stop playing anyway, but I really had some soul crushing hands. Around 05:00 in the morning on Tuesday I quit my session, which is the 2nd time ever I quit because I just couldn’t handle the beats any longer. The last time was in February where I decided after that night I needed to move down in limits.

Since Tuesday I played two small sessions after work, trying to play less tables and focus on my game. I have some plans to mix things up and although it didn’t work out the first day (losing $181 in 2k hands), I had a extremely good session on Thursday winning $1.089 in a little over 3k hands. I checked how long ago it was until I had a $1K+ winning day and was shocked to found out it was the 3th of May! This used to happen a lot more and I’ve been up $1K+ plenty of times the last couple of months, I just could never finish the day on my high. I only played about 15/16 tables at the same time during these two sessions and although the sample is really small, I could really use this! I’m still down $5k for this month but I hope I can continue this upswing on Sunday and win back some money and get more confident about my game.

During the last months I really had the feeling I was not playing worse then last year, but my opponents really improved a lot. Since I’m working part-time next to trying to achieve SNE I really have no time to work on my game and study my opponents in detail. I’ve actually never done this really and if you would ask me this wasn’t really necessary last year to be a small winner at $5/$10 but it is now. I’m 100% familiar with the fact poker isn’t just playing and studying should be part of your game, but when deciding to go for SNE at the beginning of the year I knew I would have little time for this. It’s one of the sacrifices of going for SNE and I don’t like it at all at the moment! I’ll have little choice and will just have to try my best until the end of the year. I’m curently at 578K VPPs which is 36K behind pace. That might not sounds that bad but I’ve also got an upcoming trip to California and Las Vegas which will start at the 3rd of September! Something horrible need to happen to me if I’ll not be a SNE at the end of the year but there is still a lot of grinding ahead of me! Luckily the amount of $3/$5 and $5/$10 tables is going up again and normally during the WSOP broadcasts, WCOOP and final months were everybody is trying to reach SN/Milestones or SNE the amount of VPPs/Hour will go up again. Still I will probably have to work about 28 hours a week until the end of the year and that is excluding the 24 hours/week I have to work at my job!

During the first 5 months of the year my girlfriend was away but now she’s back I also have to give her enough attention of course! I already promised a trip to Miami/Bahamas (PCA) for coming January (I will play the PCA as SNE reward) so that leaves me no other choice then to work hard and have a little less fun. I’ve had a blast so far this summer and I’ve been drinking every weekend with hardly any exercise. I’ve cycled 3 times since my Alpe D’Huez trip and together with the bad results this doesn’t help my game at all of course. Las Vegas is in 3 weeks and when I’m back I’ll change my lifestyle back again to little/no drinking, more exercise and a little healthier food! You got to enjoy life so I’m not cutting down now it’s summer but it’s definitely affects my game! Also I have to cycle 150km in two weeks and I’m not sure how the heck I’m going to do that without any training!

For now this is it, I hope you can forgive the fact that I’m not blogging that active at the moment. Looking at my schedule I’ll probably not going to put in a lot more blogs till the end of the year. You can follow me on Twitter and possibly I’ll write a small blog about my Las Vegas trip, no promises! I’m planning to party a lot, playing a bit of cash games but poker isn’t the main goal this time.

Thanks for your patience and see you at the tables!
